Isaac Wright - NC Continental Line, Revolutionary War. For his services he received a land grant of 365 acres
on the East Fork of Stones River at Hall's Hill in Rutherford Co., TN. He was a member of the Order of the Cincinnati.
This organization was formed by George Washington. Members were restricted to men who served as officers during the Revolutionary
war.
FROM THE RESEARCH NOTES OF EMILY DILL FLORIDA ABOUT 1985.
Hall's Hill Mill was founded in the 1780's
by Isaac Wright and was located on the south side of Stone's River. The mill was first called Wright's Mill. It stayed
in the Wright family all of the nineteenth century. In 1902, a great flood destroyed the mill. Thompson Wright (Isaac's
son) rebuilt the mill on the north side of the river. Isaac Wright died and his widow married Mr. Hall (which is how the mill
got its name).
A man named Tilford bought the mill during World War I. He sold the mill during the 1920's to John
Northcutt. Northcutt was a school teacher in Hall's Hill so he had the mill operated by Ellis Floyd. In 1929, after the
opening of Carnation Milk Plant, Northcutt had a hammer feed mill installed to crush cattle feed. He bought this and had it
put in for $700.00. Before Northcutt bought the mill, flour, meal, and sawed logs were the only products manufactured. In
1920-1940 the rate of sawed logs was, just sixty cents per 100 feet. Northcutt cemented over the dam which raised the water
level. Farmers upstream threatened him with law suits, so he voluntarily destroyed the concrete with a jack-hammer. Northcutt
died in 1941, and Ellis Floyd (a Wright descendant), who was operator of the mill, bought it after Northcutt's death.
In 1944, he sold the mill to a man named Ezell. Ezell kept it for a few years and sold to Will Hudson. Hudson then sold to
Beaty Bowling, whose son owns it now.

Notes for Mary "Polly" Wright:
Joseph Dill put up a dowry of 50 pounds, according to the document
also signed by Polly's father, Isaac Wright.
The guardianship of the youngest daughter, Amanda, was given to Jacob
Wright who must have been a member of Mary Polly's family. Jacob Wright was also an executor of the will along with the
oldest son, Isaac Dill. Joseph freed a Negro woman named Patsy "for kindness to me in my affliction." In the TN
Census of 1850, Patsy Dill is listed as living in a household of her own at the age of 65.
Generation 2
Joseph
"AI" Dill is the son of Joseph "A" Dill and Mary Ann Ross. He was born Abt. 1760 in MD. He died Abt. 1826
in Rutherford Co., TN. Burial in Pitts-Dill Cem., Hwy 96E, Murfreesboro, Rutherford Co., TN.
Notes for Joseph "AI"
Dill:
According to oral tradition, the Dill family lived in MD and supported the King of England. Based on the information
in the Charleston public records, and the land on James Island, this is probably true. They did not want to be involved in
the Revolution. Joseph received an original land grant for 41 acres on May 15, 1789 in Rutherford County (this may have been
Wilson Co). This was granted by the hand of Richard Caswell, Governor and Commander in Chief of North Carolina. After the
birth of the last child, Amanda, and before Polly's death in 1818, the Joseph Dill family moved to Rutherford County,
TN. Polly's father, Isaac Wright, had received a 375 acre grant in Rutherford County on the east bank of Stones River,
(Surveyed March 2, 1786). October 13, 1803, Isaac obtained an additional 423 acres from Joseph Erwin from Robert and William
White from Joseph White. A part of an original grant (4800 acres) from Thomas L. Hamilton heir of Surgeon Hance Hamilton,
deceased, on both sides of E fork of Stones River. The Wright family, including some of Polly's brothers and sisters,
were already established in Rutherford County by the time Joseph and Polly arrived with their family. Their descendents make
up a number of families that remain in Rutherford County Public land records in the Spartanburg Archives indicate that
Joseph(A1) purchased land in the area on July 22, 1793. This would have been shortly after the death of Joseph (A). He sold
this land on November 2, 1814. They appear in Rutherford County in 1810. Mary Polly died June 7, 1818. Amanda was born in
1815. The site of Joseph Dill's plantation mentioned in his will of 1826 lies on the right of Hwy 96E, Lascassas Pike,
immediately after crossing Bushnell (Bushman's)Creek. The Pitts were the family that owned the property in more recent
times. A grave house once marked their graves. The old grave yard is at this time covered by a large grove of pine trees and
ground cover.
PITTS CEMETERY - Lascassas Quadrangle. NC on Lascassas Pike (Hwy 96) after road (left)
to Oakland High School cemetery is on right (E) side of road. 1/10 mile N of Bushnell (Bushman's) creek Bridge on Hwy
96 about 250 from road on a wooded knoll. 40 or more unmarked graves. By: Bob Ragland.
George Todd and his family have
lived on this property for 30 years. An old log house is still standing which was the -plantation- home of Joseph Dill (1790-1826)
and Mary "Polly" Wright.(1770-1818) who immigrated here around 1815. They are buried here on a little rise. Their
graves were marked by a log enclosure which has become part of the growth and soil accumulation on their graves. There is
a small stone which appears to be the top of an old marker over one of the graves. There are probably other Dill family members
buried here.
Cadar Dement purchased this land for $1,100 in 1830 after Joseph Dill's death. Deed records indicate
this property was transferred to Joseph Dill from William A Sublett in 1819. It was originally a part of the hunting grounds
used, but not occupied, by many surrounding Indian tribes. It was later part of a 640 acre land grant given to the solders
who fought in the North Carolina Continental Line during the Revolution. The land grant was purchased by Mr. Bushnell. According
to another oral tradition: "The Dill's once owned all the land on the right of Lascassas Pike from Bushnell Creek
to Lascassas." This is a distance of about ten miles.

NOTES FROM LEFFEL BROWN RECORDED AT THE FLORIA CEMETERY CLEANING NOVEMBER 13, 2001. Transcribed by Madge Ann
Florida Patton and included here by Gwendolyn Hopkins Boyd.
The Brashears are kin to the Brown's two or three different
ways. First, Jessie Brashears came in here and he owned the land where Oakland School is now located. He lived about ten years
and died leaving about nine children. He sold that and bought a big track of land off Bevins Hill Road, between Bevins Hill
Road and the river. He was a county surveyor between the time it became Murfreesboro from Cannonsburg, between 1812 - 1820.
he did all of the surveying for the county. He made a will in 1818, he wasn't old, but knew he was going to die. He had
a son, Jessie W, who was four years old when they probated the will in 1822. He gave a 1,000 acres to two of his sons on the
Cumberland River in Montgomery County. Youngest son, Jessie, and another son Abraham divided his plantation between them.
There was a spring on the river property so he ran the dividing line down middle of the spring so both would have water on
their property.
His wife had a homestead and dowry as long as she lived. Jessie went over on Cranor Road off Woodbury
Pike (Highship Road) and brought a track of land. The Brashears Cemetery is on Cranor Road. Son Jessie W is buried in the
Brashears Cemetery on Cranor Road. He married Sarah Ann Brown, she was Thomas Brown's daughter. Thomas Brown just had
two children, a son and a daughter. His son was named Phillip Jones Brown for Phillip Osborne and a Jones Osborne from back
in Virginia. Phillip Jones married a Reeves. Had a big track of land across the river from Brown's Mill. Reeves lived
where old John Thomas's graveyard is located off Compton and Sharpsville Road just by side of road.

Notes for Isaac Wright Brashears:
Jesse and Betsy must have
moved back and forth from Guilford, NC, and Rutherford County, TN. Jesse still owned his land in Rockingham Co., NC, when
he died. In 1838, Isaac W. and Sarah joined Henry and Elizabeth Trott (and possibly others) and migrated to Houston, TX. Henry
Trott had purchased a large tract of land (829 acres) in the area of Brown's Mill Road and Sharpsville in 1819 for $3,500.
Trott build a dam, grist mill and saw mill on the mill site. In the late 1820's, he borrowed $600 from Charles Anderson
and gave Anderson a mortgage on the property. In 1834, Charles Anderson had the sheriff sell it on the court house steps in
Murfreesboro. Henry Trott had not paid anything on the principle or interest. (See notes for John W. Brown, Jr.)
From
a Houston "Mug Book" published in 1895: "The Honorable Isaac Wright Brashear, for many years a resident of
this city, was a native of Guilford County, North Carolina, where he was born in the year 1811. His parents, who were also
natives of North Carolina, moved from that state about the year 1815, to middle Tennessee and settled in Rutherford County.
In this county Isaac W was reared. His early lot was by no means an easy one, for his father died when Isaac W was as yet
a child, and the family being left in straitened circumstances, he was early thrown on his own resources. He began the serious
duties of life for himself at the age of twelve, finding a home among the farmers of Rutherford County, for who he worked
during the winter. He thus acquired the elements of a common English education, and formed the useful habits of industry and
self reliance. February 13, 1833, he married Sarah Trott, a native of Rutherford County, and settled on a farm, which he carried
on with only moderate success for about six years. In 1839, he moved to Texas in company with his father-in-law, Henry Trott,
who had previously visited the country and selected a location in the vicinity of Houston. Here Messrs. Trott and Brashear
purchased a large tract of land, being that now included in the suburbs of Chaneyville and Houston Heights, on which they
settled and engaged in farming. Subsequently, Mr. Brashear moved into the City of Houston and embarked extensively in land
speculation. He was a man of energetic nature and sound business ideas, and he soon acquired prominence, and laid the foundation
for what has since proved to be a very large estate He was a member of the Constitutional Convention of 1845, serving with
the late Alexander McGowan, for Harris County. He advocated, in that body, the insertion in the organic law of the state of
liberal provision on homesteads and personal property exemptions, and the setting apart of a reasonable share of the public
domain for school purposes. It is to the credit of Harris County that both her representatives contended sturdily for these
measures, and that it was largely through their efforts and influence that the success of each was attained. In 1852, he was
elected to the State Senate from his Senatorial District, becoming a candidate chiefly on account of this friendship for General
(Sam) Houston, who, it was known, would be acandidate at the ensuing session of the Legislature for the United States Senate,
and who he wished to support for that position. He was actively engaged in business pursuits, and to some extent in politics,
up to his death, which occurred September 23, 1859.
It would probably not sub serve any useful purpose to speculate
now as to how a man of the gifts and standing of Isaac Wright Brashear would have conducted himself in the great civil commotion
of 1861-65, nor what part he would have played in the ear of industrial development following that period, but speaking from
the later achievements of others, with whose success his own compared most favorably at the time of his death, it may safely
be said that, had he been spared, he would not only be numbered among the pioneers of this locality, but would rank as one
of the builders of the commonwealth. Opportunity has much to do with achievement, and opportunity is what was denied many
of Texas' most talented men.
Mr Brashear left surviving his widow and five children. His widow is still (i.e. in
1895), being now in her seventy-eight year, and one of the oldest settlers in Houston. The children who became grown were
two sons, John and Henry, and two daughters, Annexa and Sallie; one daughter, Bettie dying at the age of fourteen.
John
Brashear, born in Rutherford County, Tennessee, February 20, 1837, were reared in Houston, filled a number of public positions
here, including those of County Clerk and Chief Justice of the county; served in the Confederate army during the late war,
and practiced law up to the time of his death, November 17, 1886. Henry Brashear, the second son, resides in Houston; had
been County Judge of Harris County, Clerk of the District Court of the same; is vice-president of the South Texas National
Bank, and otherwise prominently connected with political, business and social life of the city. The daughters are both married,
the former being the wife of Charles Miller, a farmer of Harris County, and the latter the wife of Colonel J. W. Johnes, of
the Houston bar. the descendants of Isaac Wright Brashear now number between twenty and twenty-five, and all are worthy of
the name they bear, and without exception are filling useful and honorable placed in society."(Clipping contributed by

FROM
THE NOTES OF EMILY DILL FLORIDA AROUND 1985:
My grandfather, James Dill (1838-1881) of the 22nd District near
Lascassas in Rutherford County, TN, fought for the North during the Civil War.
Captain John Faver Cason who owned Cason's
Hill fought for the Union. He was a captain in the Union army. He had a beautiful race horse named Flower Direct.- Mr. Greer,
who was a Union sympathizer, had his tongue cut out by bushwhackers in front of his family and bleed to death. A Mr. Burnett
was shot in the face as he exited his home one night. Burnett's wife was down over her husband when the shooter pushed
back his wife's bonnet and shot Burnett again. Mr. Cason and Mr. Dill received word to come home. Capt Cason had permission
to hang the guilty men. The word was out that my great grandfather, Thomas Dill, was next to be killed. Capt. Cason found
one of the hit men in a barber shop in Lebanon, TN. The hit man was hung on a tree until he was dead on a street in Lebanon.
Mr. Dill searched for the other men responsible for these atrocities. He found a man who was in the vicinity of the
John Leeman and Jim Hopkins farms on the road that runs between Twelve Corners and Cainsville Pike in the Oregon area. When
he saw Mr. Dill begged for mercy. He was caught and rode on a horse behind Mr. Dill to a certain tree across the road from
the Leeman house. I don't know who lived in the Leeman his period. He was hung until dead. My grandfather went to the
store in Lascassas and told them that if any of their hit men harmed his father in any way, even one hair on his head, the
entire village would be burned to the ground. They knew he meant every single word. At this time he named the man that had
hired the hit men. However, a group of Rebel soldiers did come to the Dill home on the Lascassas Pike where my grandfather
was a blacksmith and asked for him to come out for a talk which he did and took the youngest son with him. The remaining male
members of the family were in the top of the half story house with their guns aimed at the men in case they were to attempt
to kill him at that time. The Unionist who lived around Lascassas thought the hit men were paid by local people. The bushwhackers
would get under the houses at night and listen to the conversations of the locals who were thought to be Northern sympathizers

Notes for Thomas "Tom" Dill:
Tom Dill was born in the log house that was called the
"Cave House" on the
Butler/Dill Farm with a cave like spring in front of the house that was known for its
pure
water. The farm was inherited by Tom, Mag and Nan Dill from their mother.
At that time there was a road that ran through
the farm called the Liberty
Murfreesboro Turnpike.
During the Civil War troops stopped and camped there to be
near the spring. The
farm was inherited by Tom Dill and his two sisters, Mag and Nan from their
mother Elvira
Simmons Butler Dill. At that time there was a road that went
through the farm called the Liberty Murfreesboro Turnpike.
The Cave House was
taken down by James Thomas Dill probably in the 1970's. It was used for storing
hay. It
was small, going in through the front door was a room with a fireplace on
the left wall. Another room was directly behind
that entry room with a door and
stairs to one room upstairs. On the back of the house was what was at one time
a
kitchen. It was in a very picturesque setting.

Letter from Thomas Lee Craddock to Gwendolyn
Hopkins dated 9/19/1983. RR #1, Box 89, Lascassas, TN 37085
Dear Gwendolyn:
Since my birthday is Oct 31, 1919,
I can go back some twenty years before you can remember things. Places and people in around Lascassas and your home place
where Boots Briley lives.
Your grandfather William Harris Hopkins I never knew. Your grandmother Lavinia Dill Hopkins
I did see. I must have been 3 to 4 years old. My parents Ellis Ogle Craddock and mother Mary Rosa Rhodes Craddock lived in
a little house about half mile east of Brown's Mill toward Halls Hill - Sharpesville.
My mama, some great aunts,
and I walked across the mill dam at Brown's Mill (was summertime and Stones River was low) up the hill and visited Mrs.
Hopkins. She had some one get me a biscuit with jam or jelly. The food and kindness of this grand ole lady were the highlight
of my visit other details are only a blur.
My dad and your Uncle George were boyhood pals. Your half brother J. D. and
half sister Frances attended Lascassas School but they were two or three grades ahead of me. I did not graduate until April
27, 1938. You have many cousins in the area. I live 25 years across road from little house where I was when I visited your
grandmother
Lavinia 60 years ago.
Sincerely,
Thomas Lee Craddock
