FROM THE NOTES OF HARRIET EMILY DILL FLORIDA ABOUT 1984:
REV. J. N. LOUGHRY: In giving a brief sketch of the life of this good man, the writer would not
open afresh the sadness and sorrow of those who were so keenly touched by his death. I realize
the great loss they sustain, his was a life of joy and blessings to them; but not only to the family
circle and near friends is such a life to be appreciated, but it becomes a heritage to a wider Circle
than one is able to understand. The influence of a useful life is beyond the kew or computation of
man and a kind word to his memory ever fitly spoken which holds up his virtues of life to the living.
Bro. Loughry had passed the age of three score and ten, he was born March 28 1826; died
October 11, 1896. He was born in Pennsylvania, near the town of Blainville and came to
Tennessee in 1848. In October 1840, under the preaching of Dr. J. C. Provine, at old Cave Spring
near Lascassas, Rutherford County, Tennessee, he professed religious and united with the
Cumberland Presbyterian Church. A short time after joining the church, he entered Princeton
University, New Jersey, finish his education and while there he took the Theological course of the
University.
He returned to Tennessee and joined the Lebanon Presbytery of the C. P. church. On March 17,
1851, he was licensed to preach and on the 12th of March 1853 ordained to the whole work of the
gospel ministry. He was well equipped for this noble work to which he was called. A fine scholar,
logic in thought and ready of speech made him a strong man in his work. He was well regarded by
the Presbytery as one of its strong Presbyters. In all the work of the church, he was ever abreast
of the times and ready to push the enterprises and course of his church; he was conservative and
mindful of. the interest of others and was thus a co-laborer of all who were working to advance
the course of the God he served. In the early part of manhood, he was a teacher of much
prominence and in 1857 was president of Green River Female Academy Elkton, Ky. In 1851, he
married Miss Adria A. Brown, who died Oct 10, 1877. In 1880, he married Mrs. Susan C Bethel
who also preceded him to the heavenly home; thus in the last few years of life he was walking
alone along its path as gently he came to the end of a long an useful career. His children will
miss his counsel and love, his friend’s one genial kind and true, his church an able and earnest
preacher, his country a useful citizen and honest man.
